Contest Theme: Capture First Light 

Description: The key to this contest is submitting your best work. Each submitted image must incorporate some creative consideration of the theme “First Light.” Each photograph image must be accompanied by a 140 max character description of how the image fits the theme.

Entry Procedure

Entrants must complete the entry form at the bottom of this page to register and pay the entry fees.

Entry Fee: $10 for a single image, or $30 for up to 5 images.

Submission Deadline: April 27th, 2020, Midnight, Pacific Standard Time

  • Please rename your images before submitting, using the following format LastNameFirstInitial-Title.jpg (e.g. SmithA-WinterSunrise.jpg)
  • Fill out the Contest Entry Form at www.flif.ca/youth-contest and upload your images. You will receive a confirmation email.
  • Images MUST be minimum 5mb file size, 4000px by 3000px, jpeg/jpg format, in Adobe RGB colour space if possible.
  • Submissions must be created after January 1st, 2019 and must not have been entered in any previous Air North First Light Image Festival photo contest.
  • Only images uploaded through the online entry form on this page will be accepted.
  • You retain full ownership of all submitted images. By submitting your images, you grant the First Light Image Festival and Writing With Light Society permission to share your images online so that the public may view all competing entries, to project or print for display your images during the Festival, and to display your images in print or online for the promotion of future Festival contests and events. Air North, title sponsor of the First Light Image Festival may use your images for promotional purposes.
  • Photographers from circumpolar regions and images made in the north are strongly encouraged.
  • Images must be free of watermarks and/or signatures

Judging

Image submissions will be judged based on two main criteria:

  1. Creative strength: The ability of the image to impact the viewer with the connection to First Light.
  2. Technical strength: use of composition, lighting and editing.

  • All images will be judged individually and anonymously, with your identifying information removed from the file name.
  • All decisions on winning images are the sole discretion of the judging panel. All decisions are final.
  • Judges are: Atushi Sugimoto, Peter Mather and Crystal Schick. Read their bios here.

Peter Mather

Peter loves (In order) soccer, photography, McDonald’s and living healthy. His photo stories revolve around life in the North, with a focus on Wildlife and community culture. He is a fellow with the International League of Conservation, a Lumix Ambassador and represented by National Geographic Image Collection.

Crystal Schick

Crystal Schick

Crystal graduated from SAIT’s photojournalism program in 2014 and immediately began working at the Calgary Herald until moving to community news and the Yukon in 2017. She is most passionate about humanitarian story telling and considers her time working with an NGO in Zambia, and with soldiers on the front lines of the war against ISIS in Iraq to be her most meaningful experiences to date. As a freelancer she has worked with The Globe and Mail, Macleans, Uphere Magazine, The Canadian Press, Reuters and Fox News. Crystal is currently the staff photographer at the Yukon News, and president of the News Photographers Association of Canada.

Atushi Sugimoto

Atushi Sugimoto

Atsushi was born and raised in Japan. He had been fascinated by the North very early on, and started with wildlife photography at the age of 20. He then began traveling to northern wild places including Yukon, Canada. Themes of his photography focus not only on wildlife, but also on northern
landscapes and lifestyles. Atsushi had visited Yukon Territory for three summers since 2008 and moved to Whitehorse Yukon in 2011. This place continues to inspire the creation of his
photography projects. He won the grand prize of First Light Image Festival Photo
Contest in 2019.
